Today in the store
See it. Own it. Follow it through.
A walk should create action, not another checklist. Start fast, then use deeper reviews only when you need them.

Set this once for the shift. You can run several walks and reviews into the same Action Board.
Choose a Store Walk
Quick is the default. Use a deeper walk when you intentionally have time to look wider.
Department Check
Choose one area when you need more depth than a whole-store walk. The check looks at readiness, execution, people, safety and department economics without trying to inspect everything.
Management Reviews
Deeper desk-side reviews stay out of the way until you need them.
Before your first walk
Quick Store Walk
You are not trying to inspect every part of the store.
- Actually go look. Answer from what you see now, not what you remember from earlier.
- Follow the prompts. They mix customer, employee, safety and operational observations.
- When something needs attention, Store Walk will help you decide what happens next.
A Quick walk usually takes about 5–8 minutes.
Action Board
The walk discovers work. This is where the shift manages it.
Walk complete
Shift handoff
A concise snapshot of what the next manager needs—not a transcript of every check.
Store setup
Stored only on this device. Turning off an area keeps irrelevant prompts out of future walks.
How Store Walk works
Store Walk is designed to teach the method while you use it. These short answers are here whenever you need a refresher.
What is a store walk?
A store walk is deliberate management time on the floor. You look at the store as it is right now, talk with people, notice what is getting in the way, and make sure problems leave with ownership instead of becoming background noise.
What does Looks good / Needs attention mean?
Looks good is a one-tap confirmation that nothing needs to happen. Needs attention means you found something worth acting on, assigning, watching, or handing off. N/A means the observation does not apply right now.
What happens when I find a problem?
Store Walk asks for a short description and then a next step. Handle it now, create a task, set a deliberate recheck, or pass it to the next manager. Critical findings use a stricter control-and-escalation path.
What are Watch and Waiting?
Watch means nothing needs to be fixed yet, but you intend to look again at a specific time or event. Waiting means progress depends on something external, such as a vendor, part, contractor, or approval, so it needs a checkpoint rather than meaningless daily carryover.
What is the Action Board?
The Action Board is the work your walks discovered. It keeps today’s priorities, open work, rechecks, waiting items, handoff work, and resolved items in one place across the management session.
What is a Challenge?
Challenges are different from normal checks. They are designed to break store blindness and make you look at the operation in a way you probably do not every day. There is not necessarily a problem to find.
Which walk or review should I choose?
Quick Store Walk is the default when you need to get around the whole store. Department Check goes deeper in one area. Management Reviews are for specific cash, shrink, labor, or ordering questions. The Action Board manages follow-up from all of them.
What should I do before ending my shift?
Open the Action Board and make a decision on unfinished work: complete it, set a recheck, record what you are waiting on, or pass it forward clearly. Then prepare the handoff so the next manager does not have to reconstruct the day.
About & privacy
Store Walk is a free management aid from Viable Food Systems. It is designed to help managers notice conditions, decide what happens next, assign ownership, recheck work and hand off clearly.
Local-first: active sessions, tasks and rotation history are stored in this browser using IndexedDB. Nothing is sent to Viable Food Systems during normal use.
Food safety: this tool supports routine management observation and follow-up. It does not replace required logs, food-safety plans, training, incident reports or applicable state/local procedures.
Public beta: Store Walk is actively being improved from real store use. If a question feels wrong, confusing or unrealistic, please tell us.
